A Sofa which Complements the Way You
Actually Live
The Balu is the centerpiece of the ORA Home collection, setting the tone for everything around it. We did not aim to create just another sofa; we set out to design one that gives people the freedom to live and interact in ways that suit their own lives. The result is a piece with a strong architectural presence and a soft, modular character, designed to adapt to the room, the people, and the moment.
BEYOND THE CONVENTION
Most sofas dictate how you sit, shaping both posture and purpose. The Balu begins with a different idea: what if the sofa adapted to the user, instead of the user adapting to the sofa? It reimagines the living space not as a fixed, formal arrangement, but as a responsive environment—polished and presentable when needed, yet intimate and enclosed in quieter moments.
The first thing visitors did at Milan Design Week was lean back into it and began to play. Tall guests deepened the seat; shorter guests pulled their bolster forward. Children sprawled across the toppers; dogs claimed the pillows on the floor. Throughout the day, the Balu continued to evolve the showroom, completely transforming the conversations, energy and imagination customers brought to the piece.
The Architecture of Comfort
The Balu Sofa is a reimagining of what a communal space can be. It moves away from the rigid “set pur pose” of traditional seating to allow the user to play.
The Base: Solid, rustic European white oak — a freestanding structure with the physical weight and natural warmth a living room. Three single-coat oil finishes let the grain breathe, so the wood feels touched rather than coated. These three tones anchor different palettes, from natural and contemporary to deep and grounded. Many customers remarked that from a standing elevation, the Balu seemed to float off the floor.
The Cushions: A structural multi-density foam base provides the integrity and support. A feather and down topper sit over the foam for the soft, inviting sink-in feeling to compliment the moment of relaxation of that moment of coming home. Together they give the Balu its signature feel — firm enough to hold you, soft enough to keep you.
The Bolsters: Four independent, heavily weighted back bolsters carry the same logic — a more structural core wrapped in a soft down and feather topper. They are not fixed elements. They can be moved to where you want them, set the depth and the posture of the seat, and unzip so the toppers can become floor mats in their own right.
CONFIGURATIONS WITHOUT A MANUAL
Because none of its elements are fixed together, the Balu can be taken apart and reconfigured without instructions. A linear sofa becomes a flat daybed; a daybed becomes a floor-level lounge with the toppers laid out as mats. The bolsters move wherever they are needed most—set against the back for the evening, pulled to the side for a nap, or placed on the floor for time spent close to children.
This is what we mean when we talk about user interaction as part of the design. The relationship with a Balu begins with the act of arranging it. Each configuration is a small reflection of the person who put it there, and the moment they are creating.
Beach, Town and Country: The Curated Textile Matrix
Functionality and refined aesthetics share the same brief when it comes to the fabric choice. The Balu is offered with a nine-tier curated textile matrix, organized around three lived environments: Beach, Town and Country. The framework is the way we actually design — each environment has its own functional demands and aesthetic.
For example, a townhouse, a pure Belgian linen lends a refined, luxurious warmth that softens hard architectural lines. For a coastal home, more open weaves and lighter tones invite barefoot afternoons. For a country interior, denser wool blends and deeper colours hold the gravity of stone walls and long evenings. Each fabric is available in a range of colours through our bespoke online customizer.
Furthermore, every upholstered cover is fully removable — for cleaning, for recovering, for changing seasons or changing minds. This is how we achieve adaptability and longevity.
MADE IN PORTUGAL
The Balu is handcrafted in our workshops in Porto. The region’s tradition of artisanal woodworking and technical upholstery makes a piece like this possible—from the balance of support and softness in the bolsters to the precision of the oak base and the finish of every removable cover. Each Balu reflects the skill of the hands that made it.

For architects, interior designers, the Balu is offered as a complete system — bespoke material matrix, full 3D architectural files, and direct access to our studio for project-specific configurations. Trade partners are invited to contact us at trade@orahome.eu to explore the full system.

The Balu is a modular system rather than a fixed object. Its cushions and bolsters rest freely on a solid oak base with no physical attachment between the elements. The user reconfigures the seat, the depth and the posture to suit the moment — and can deconstruct the sofa into a daybed or a floor-level lounge using the same components.
Every element pairs a structural multi-density foam core with a feather and down topper. This combination gives the Balu both the support it needs to hold its shape for years and the soft, sink-in feel of traditional luxury upholstery. The freestanding oak base and fully removable covers allow individual elements to be serviced, recovered or updated independently.
The Balu's nine-tier curated textile matrix is grouped around three environments: Beach (lighter, open-weave fabrics), Town (refined linens such as pure Belgian linen) and Country (deeper, denser wool blends). Each fabric is offered in a range of colours, and every cover is fully removable for seasonal adaptability.
